Qualifications Explained
DSA ADI DSA is the Driving Standards Agency. They are responsible for conducting driving tests and ensuring instructors and examiners maintain their standards. ADI stands for Approved Driving Instructor. Only DSA ADI’s can charge money or moneys worth for driving instruction. www.dsa.gov.uk
DSA Registered Fleet Trainer Fleet trainers work with company vehicle drivers to help reduce occupational road risk. The DSA aims to improve road safety by making sure fleet driver trainers are appropriately trained to pass their knowledge on to others. This is part of the government's Road Safety Strategy. Fleet trainers provide assessment and training in areas such as vehicle checks, driving assessment, defensive driving & eco driving.
ORDIT Registered Parts 1, 2 & 3 Premises Inspected ORDIT is the Official Register of Driving Instructor Trainers. ORDIT trainers have been assessed by the DSA and are certified as qualified to deliver a high standard of training in teaching driving instruction. Part 1 is Theory, Part 2 is Driving Ability and Part 3 is Instructional Ability. Pass Plus Instructor Pass Plus is a training course specifically aimed at new drivers, designed by the DSA with the help of insurers and the driving instruction industry. www.passplus.org.uk/index.asp
Driving Tests
IAM Advanced Test IAM is the Institute of Advanced Motorists. Their test lasts up to 90 minutes and covers all kinds of roads: motorways, dual & single carriageways, country roads and congested streets. Candidates must demonstrate an ability to concentrate while handling the vehicle capably and sympathetically. The examiners are all holders of Advanced Police driving qualifications. www.iam.org.uk
Diamond Advanced Test Diamond is the Driving Instructors Association. Their Advanced Test provides candidates the opportunity to demonstrate their skills over a variety of road and traffic conditions, including urban, rural and dual carriageways and, where possible, motorways. Candidates will also be assessed on set manoeuvres, questions on the Highway Code and eco-safe driving. The test lasts 60 minutes and 6 minor errors are permitted. www.driving.org/diamond/index.html
Diamond Special Test The Special Test is aimed at driver trainers who wish to take their driving to the highest level available to a non emergency response driver, and is arguably the most difficult driving test in the UK. In addition to the content of the Advanced Test, candidates will be asked to provide two short sections of commentary driving. The test is conducted over a longer route than the Advanced Test and lasts 90 minutes. 2 minor errors are permitted however they must not be repeated. www.driving.org/diamond/index.html
RoSPA Gold The RoSPA advanced driving test is regarded as the most comprehensive and challenging available to the public. RoSPA Gold is the highest civilian driving standard available and the holder will be a master of his or her art. It will be awarded only to the driver who displays a complete understanding and appropriate application of the principles outlined in Roadcraft. With all this in place the gold standard driver will be able to make unobtrusive, planned, polished progress consistent with safety and the law. www.roadar.org.uk
