Instructor Training

Being a driving instructor is an immensely rewarding career. No day is the same, you meet a wide variety of people and make a massive lifelong impression on them, and you get to share in their success. The diversity of the job opens up a whole new world of possibilities. Once qualified you decide what you’ll do and when you’ll do it. You could concentrate on teaching learners or move into company fleet support and advanced driving instruction, or teach people with disabilities, the choice is yours:

For many people the main reasons for becoming a driving instructor are freedom and choice – freedom to decide your own future. You will be completely self employed and free to make your own decisions. You will be able to build your business and your reputation. The only person to decide how much work you’ll do is you. You choose. It’s your life!

No previous teaching experience or formal qualifications are required. You must have no more than 6 penalty points on your licence, have held a valid full UK licence for at least 3.5 years, be able to read a new style registration plate from 27.5 meters and pass a Criminal Record Bureau (CRB) check. All you need is a willingness to learn as all the training you require is provided as part of the course.

The path to becoming an Approved driving Instructor is broken down into 3 exams:

The whole process must be completed within two years, and while you are allowed unlimited attempts of the part 1 exam, you are only allowed 3 attempts at each of the part 2 and 3 exams.

The time taken to complete the course depends upon your current commitments and some home study is required. Our training program is structured to adapt to your needs: if you’ve just been made redundant and have a lot of free time to study you can train at a faster pace and be working as an instructor in a few short months. If you have work or family commitments that don’t currently allow you much free time to study, then our program will still fit in around you.

At the end of the qualification process you can take up a franchise with Freedom School of Motoring, or set up on your own or join a national or local company, it’s your choice, and we will be happy to discuss your options with you.
